Imogen Cunningham Award Winners

April 4–May 20, 1983

Transamerica Pyramid, 600 Montgomery, San Francisco

Friends of Imogen Cunningham is dedicated to furthering the art of photography. Its principal activity is sponsorship of an annual photography award, a living memorial to the life and work of the world-famous San Francisco Bay Area photographer, Imogen Cunningham. Imogen died in 1976 at age 93; her work spanned 75 years of photographic history.

The Imogen Cunningham Photography Award is not based on an open competition, but is given to photographers of merit whose work is not widely known.

Friends of Imogen Cunningham, which is not a membership organization, embraces all who participate in planning and supporting the endeavor. The first annual Imogen Cunningham Photography Award was made in 1978 and the sixth on April 12, 1983, the 100th anniversary of Imogen Cunningham’s birth.

Featuring brightly colored fabrics, strobe lights and natural settings, the photographs of Jerry Takigawa hang in the balance between the best traditions of high art and high fashion. His images have a lush, vaguely surreal quality that is subtle, appealing and contemporary. Evolving from painting to photography through photo-realism, Jerry made a complete transition to photography in 1969. He currently works as a freelance photographer and designer in the Monterey Bay Area.

In 1982 Jerry Takigawa became the first color photographer to receive the Imogen Cunningham Photography Award.
